Artist's Description

The Christmas Tree

Within the customs of the Christmas holiday, the Christmas tree also holds great significance. Though no one is sure why, Christmas trees and presents became immediately connected with one another. As early as the 16th century, some Christians began erecting decorated trees and placing gifts on their limbs and beneath them as a yearly custom. However, this practice was not widely recognized until the middle of the 19th century.

According to James Hewitt, author of "The Christmas Tree," "In the mid-19th Century, thanks to the popularity of the British Royalty, namely Queen Victoria and her German Prince Albert, the Christmas tree had an increase in popularity on a worldwide basis....Published pictures showed the royal couple standing with their children around a Christmas tree." Christmas presents were also a part of their tradition.
